How Does Abortion Pill Reversal Work?

The medication abortion process

The abortion pill (medication abortion) is actually a two-step process rather than taking one pill. This method is only for those who are less than ten weeks pregnant. After ten weeks, you would require a surgical abortion to end your pregnancy.

The first drug you take is called mifepristone (Mifeprex®). Mifepristone blocks the production of the hormone progesterone, which helps the embryo implant on the wall of your uterus once fertilization has occurred. Mifepristone causes the lining of the uterus to thin and prevents the embryo from staying implanted.

At this point of the process, you have the possibility of reversing the effects with the abortion pill reversal method. It may not be too late if you act quickly.

Once you take the second drug, Misoprostol, it is almost always too late to turn the process around. Misoprostol causes your body to cramp and contract in order to expel the embryo.

It is possible to reverse the effects of the first drug, mifepristone, taken in a medication abortion (abortion pill). The abortion pill reversal (APR) process involves being prescribed a large dose of progesterone. Timing is everything. Studies suggest that progesterone should be given within 24 hours after a woman has taken the first pill, mifepristone.
