What Can Guys Do with an Unplanned Pregnancy?
Learning of your partner’s unplanned pregnancy can be a surprising and overwhelming experience. However, you can make a world of difference in your partner’s life if you stand by her and support her.
At Woman’s New Life Clinic, we offer various pregnancy services to serve your partner, and we’d be happy to support you, too. Visit us together for professional couples counseling to discuss your situation in a safe space.
In the meantime, here are four things you can do as you navigate this unplanned pregnancy.
#1. Give Yourself Time
An unplanned pregnancy can put you and your partner in a state of crisis. This is an unexpected and life-changing situation, and you may be feeling some big emotions.
Even though your partner is the one physically experiencing the pregnancy, you may also be feeling the weight of it. It is ok to acknowledge that this is a difficult situation for you, too. Identify the crisis, and be patient with yourself.
#2. Have a Healthy Dialogue with Your Partner
It will take some time to process the news, and one way to help move this along is to have honest conversations with your partner.
Invite your partner to share her thoughts and feelings and then share yours. Talking can help you both feel a sense of release and unity as you try to understand each other’s perspectives.
During these talks, make sure it’s clear that neither of you is trying to change the other one’s mind. You are simply talking and listening and will work toward a solution together when the time is right.
#3. Research Pregnancy Options and Assistance
While you may only be in the exploration phase, you can help your partner by researching pregnancy options and assistance to learn what is available.
Keep in mind that if your partner hasn’t already, it’s in her best interest to confirm her pregnancy to verify it’s progressing within her uterus, learn how far along she is (gestational age), and estimate her due date. These details will reveal available options and protect her health and safety.
She can receive a free pregnancy test and an ultrasound scan to confirm her pregnancy at Woman’s New Life Clinic.
#4. Support and Encourage Her
Your partner may experience physical, hormonal, and emotional changes during pregnancy. You can support her by listening, helping with daily tasks, and showing her you care.
When in doubt about how best to support her, ask her what she needs or wants. She might list something simple like picking up groceries or asking for quality time with you.
Your support during this time will mean everything to her and can strengthen your relationship in the long run.
