Woman Considering pregnancy options

Considering pregnancy options?

What to do before making a decision regarding my pregnancy.

There are certain experiences that cause poignant pauses in our lives. These experiences are very meaningful and can be a source of joy or pain. We often cannot predict how we will act when an unexpected event occurs.

As human beings, we strive to have control in our lives. It makes us feel safe and secure.

Unexpected events, however, sometimes put us in the position of having to make a choice.

Do we confront it?
Do we run from it?
Am I doing the right thing?
What is the meaning of this event at this point in my life?
Why is this happening to me now?

These are some of the questions that we ask ourselves when faced with a decision. When we feel helpless, we scramble to find a way to bring our life back on track.

Unexpected pregnancy is one such event.

It is an experience that many women face. This can be a very tumultuous time where avoidance and escape are often used.

It is natural for us to seek escape when we perceive that we will experience difficulty or pain. We look for a way to re-establish equilibrium and act from a stance of self-preservation.

Women, in a state of crisis, often make the decision to have an abortion.

It is enticing to have an option that will provide relief from this turmoil. What looks like a quick, legal way out, however, is often met with internal moral conflicts and unintended consequences.

Making a decision while in crisis can be risky.

It is a normal human reaction to seek a way out of an uncomfortable, painful or scary situation.

At the same time, it is not healthy to make a permanent decision in that state.

Making permanent decisions based upon the desire for relief alone is extremely risky. Many women experience the sought-after relief, but afterward are faced with a permanent sense of loss.

This loss can be defined in various ways, as each person experiences it differently.

It can include:

  • Guilt
  • Sadness
  • Sleeping problems
  • Appetite changes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling a need to fill the void created by the loss
  • Fear of impact of this abortion on future pregnancies
  • Mixed feelings toward those involved in the decision process

The benefits of talking to a professional counselor

If you are considering your pregnancy options, take some time to slow down. Many women find it helpful to talk through this decision with someone outside of their circle of friends and family. Talking to an unbiased, professional counselor can provide the clarity to make an informed and peaceful decision.
