Is an Online or At-Home Abortion Safe?
If you have an unplanned pregnancy in Louisiana, you can’t legally have an abortion at an abortion clinic, and all abortion clinics in Louisiana are closed.
You may be considering ordering the abortion pill online and taking it at home to avoid the hassle of travel.
But before you do that, there are some things you should know.
The Abortion Pill is Not Safe for Everyone
Mifeprex is a drug that terminates a pregnancy by first blocking the hormone progesterone.
The second part of the pill series, Misoprostol, then propels your body into labor-like cramps that will force your pregnancy to be expelled from the uterus. This can be a messy and painful process–much like an early version of birth.
You shouldn’t take the abortion pill if:
- You are more than 10 weeks gestation
- You are using an IUD for birth control
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients
Taking the abortion pill also comes with risks, even if you meet all the criteria for the medication. According to Mayo Clinic, some of those risks include:
- Nausea/ Vomiting
- Abdominal Pain
- Heavy Bleeding
- Headache
- Diarrhea
Where You Get the Pill Matters
The FDA has highly regulated Mifeprex because it is a very strong drug. They recommend that only medical professionals should dispense the medication.
Third party sources who sell the pill series may not be adhering to these regulations, so the pills may be contaminated, expired, or fake.
There are Alternatives That Might Be a Better Fit for You
It is never a good idea to rush into a big decision. In order to make a confident decision you should do your research on all of the options available to you.
Other options include:
- Adoption. If you choose this route you can expect to find financial help with your prenatal and postpartum care. You also can help choose the adoptive parents and how much (or little) contact you have with your child in the future.
- Parenting is an option, even if it feels like a scary one. There are plenty of financial resources available in Louisiana to help you succeed. You also will get the opportunity to know and love a child who shares your DNA and maybe even some of your quirks. You will never wonder “what if.”
