How to Navigate the Holidays with an Unexpected Pregnancy

Being unexpectedly pregnant around the holidays can make family gatherings, commitments, and activities daunting. But you can do this.

Here are a few tips for navigating the holidays.

1. Have Patience with Yourself

Pregnancy causes your body to go through many hormonal changes. You might experience bloating, nausea, fatigue, and even strange symptoms like a metallic taste in your mouth or a nosebleed

If that Christmas cookie doesn’t taste like you remember or you don’t feel up for an evening outing, have patience with yourself.

Take the time you need to rest while still embracing the holidays. A movie night could be your ideal mix of holiday cheer and relaxation.

2. Set Healthy Boundaries

Remember, no one is entitled to your personal information. You don’t have to tell anyone you’re pregnant if you’re not ready yet.

Before you head to a gathering with family or friends, think about what you’re comfortable sharing and what’s better left unsaid.

Decide how you will answer “How are you?” and “What’s new?” before heading out. Sharing that you are happy to be done with finals or are currently looking for a new job could answer the small-talk questions without revealing your pregnancy.

3. Find a Trustworthy Community

Do you have any trustworthy friends or relatives you can confide in? Even if you aren’t ready to tell everyone your news, it’s essential to avoid self-isolation. Support from your inner circle can encourage you through the holiday season and beyond.

Share your feelings with someone you can trust, or even talk with a professional counselor if you need a neutral person. A counselor will keep your information completely confidential.
