How Do I Support My Friend Experiencing an Unexpected Pregnancy?

Unexpected pregnancy can be a difficult mental, physical, and emotional time for your friend.

Her body is undergoing hormonal and physical changes, and she may not know what to do yet. It can feel incredibly overwhelming if this wasn’t in her plans.

She needs your support more than ever. Here are some tips for supporting her.

1. Show Up for Her.

Part of being a supportive friend, no matter the circumstances, is showing up for her in the hard times, happy times, and the times in between.

Showing up might mean hanging out regularly, going to brunch, or answering when she texts or calls you to talk. It can also be attending pregnancy appointments or sitting with her when she needs someone to listen.

Give your friend quality time when and however she needs it.

2. Listen First, Speak Second.

There are many decisions to make with an unexpected pregnancy. Your friend is likely weighing the options and wondering about her future.

Your friend has to make this decision for herself. Even if you have a strong opinion, prioritize listening to her as she processes her emotions.

If she invites you to share your thoughts, share in a kind and compassionate way while reiterating it’s ultimately her decision. This reminder will help relieve her of some of the pressure she may be feeling from her partner, parents, or others in her life.

3. Help in Practical Ways.

When your friend feels emotionally or physically tired from pregnancy, it may become more difficult for her to keep up with the day-to-day errands and chores.

Offer to help pick up groceries for her, do dishes, or run errands. Cook her a meal or bring takeout. These little things can make a world of difference in her life.

4. Know When to Suggest Professional Counseling.

You are not equipped to be your friend’s professional counselor, but you can point her to one.

If your friend exhibits feelings of hopelessness or sadness that last for weeks or disrupt her ability to function, it’s time for her to seek professional counseling.

5. Suggest Visiting Woman’s New Life Clinic!

Woman’s New Life Clinic offers free and confidential professional counseling services in New Orleans and Baton Rouge to help women facing unplanned pregnancies.

Your friend can schedule an appointment at one of our clinics for professional counseling and early pregnancy services, such as pregnancy testing, ultrasound, and more.

All of this can be extremely helpful if your friend is trying to make a decision regarding her pregnancy or is in need of additional support for her situation.

Thank you for supporting your friend through this difficult time. You’re making such a difference in her life!
